OfficeElaine Nugent-Borakove, a leading criminal justice consultant and senior staff member with The Justice Management Institute (JMI) will become JMI's Vice President and Director of JMI's Washington, D.C., office on September 1, 2008. Her appointment was announced by Alan Carlson, JMI's President, and Barry Mahoney, who will succeed Mr. Carlson as President in September. In her new position, Ms. Nugent-Borakove will have particular responsibility for staff recruitment, development of JMI programs and projects, liaison with other organizations working on justice system improvement, and management of many of JMI's projects. Ms. Nugent-Borakove joined JMI in 2007. Since then she has led or worked on research and technical assistance projects involving criminal caseflow management in several large jurisdictions, development of evidence-based criminal justice system practices (as part of a four organization consortium working with the National Institute of Corrections), and analysis of justice system workloads. Prior to joining JMI, Ms. Nugent-Borakove served as the Director of the Office of Research & Evaluation at the National District Attorneys Association's American Prosecutors Research Institute. Her work in this area included developing a quantitative method for objectively assessing prosecutor workloads and projecting resource needs as well as the development of a performance measurement framework in prosecution services. She is the author of numerous publications and reports on the criminal justice system for federal, state, local, and foundation clients and is the co-editor of The Changing American Prosecutor that will be published by SUNY Press in 2008. She has also authored numerous book chapters on prosecution including one that will be included in Visions for Change: Criminal Justice for the 21st Century to be published this year by Prentice Hall. In jointly announcing the designation of Ms. Nugent-Borakove as JMI's Vice President and Director of its Washington, D.C., office, Alan Carlson and Barry Mahoney emphasized her past accomplishments, the contributions she has already made to JMI, and the strengths that she will bring to future organizational development. Elaine's experience expands and complements JMI's knowledge of the justice system, they said. She knows how to design and lead highly relevant and practical research and technical assistance projects, she has the ability to work effectively with both practitioners and policymakers, and she has the vision and energy to make great contributions to JMI's future and the administration of justice. The Justice Management Institute is a Colorado-based non-profit organization formed in 1993. JMI conducts research, education and training, and technical assistance projects focused on improving the operations of justice systems at the state and local level. Since it was founded, JMI has been involved in over 250 projects in state and local jurisdictions across the US and in several foreign countries. The Institute is governed by a seven-person Board of Directors consisting of individuals with extensive experience in justice system operations.
