Basic Resources, Budget and FinanceDescription The purpose of this workshop is to introduce court managers, clerks of court, and judges in management roles to the basic elements and fundamentals of court budgeting, finance and resource allocation. This is especially important for court managers, clerks of court, and judges new to management roles involving budgets. They need to become familiar with the terminology and be aware of the policy options regarding managing resources. More effective and efficient use of those resources allocated to the court will improve the court's ability to fulfill its role, even with limited resources. JMI's Experience with this Curriculum JMI has presented a basic Resources, Budget and Finance workshop on a tuition basis for many years. It has been presented in various lengths nationally and within states to fit the needs of the audience. The two and one half day and a one and one-half hour curriculum have been developed as part of the National Association for Court Management's (NACM) Core Competency Curriculum Guidelines development. Adapting the Curriculum for Your Jurisdiction The core curriculum, including materials and exercises, is fully developed. Because of JMI's experience with the topic, materials and exercises can be used as is, or can readily be adapted to specific fiscal circumstances in your jurisdiction. In order to adapt the curriculum to your laws, fiscal practices, and nomenclature JMI suggests working with a committee containing representatives of the sponsoring organization and representatives of the attendees. JMI faculty are available to present the curriculum or JMI can work with faculty from your jurisdiction. Presentation Options The curriculum can be presented at several lengths. Typically the workshop has been presented as a two and one-half day program that includes a team exercise. Shorter versions of the curriculum can be delivered by reducing the topics covered or altering the format. One day and one and one-half hour sessions have been presented at a statewide judiciary or association meeting. Contact Elaine Nugent-Borakove at enugent (at) jmijustice.org |
